Winter's Formula is Used to Predict Adequate Compensation for Metabolic Acidosis

Use Winters Formula to predict whether there is the expected compensation for a Metabolic Acidosis. PC02 = 1.5 x hco3 +8 +/- 2. If the PC02 on ABG matches the result from Winter's equation, +/- 2, there is the expected respiratory compensation for the Metabolic Acidosis. If the actual PC02 is lower, there is an additional Respiratory Alkalosis. If the actual PC02 is higher, than there is an additional Respiratory Acidosis in play.
